Why the panels come off, and what goes back on
Panels and racking are attached through the roofing. To replace or repair the roof under them, a licensed contractor shuts the system down, detaches the panels, and reinstalls and tests everything after the new roofing is down. Who does which part depends on the company, so the questions to ask are on the re-roof page.
- 1The system is shut down and disconnected
- 2Panels and racking come off and are stored
- 3The roofer does the roof
- 4Racking is reinstalled and flashed
- 5Panels are reconnected, tested and checked

- Ask for the contractor's CSLB license number and look it up at cslb.ca.gov. The CSLB site also explains when a California contractor license is required.
- Get the quote in writing, itemized: the number of panels, removal and storage, new flashing and hardware, reinstall, a production check, the permit, and the schedule.
- Be wary of large deposits or cash-only terms. Ask who is responsible if a panel is damaged during removal and who stands behind roof attachments afterward.
- If the roof and the solar are separate contractors, ask who coordinates the schedule and how long the system will be off.

Solar removal and repair questions
How much does it cost to take solar panels off and put them back on?
Published ranges are roughly $200–$350 per panel for removal and reinstall (Fixr, national, and Helios Energy Global, Southern California), about $4,000–$7,000 for 20 panels. HomeGuide gives $4,000–$10,000 for removing a 20-panel system. Roofing is separate. See the cost guide.
Who can remove and reinstall solar panels?
A licensed contractor. Some solar companies do it, some roofers coordinate it, and on a leased or PPA system the provider may do or approve it. Ask for the contractor's license number and check it at cslb.ca.gov. See removal for a roof replacement.
Why is detach and reinstall needed?
The panels and racking are attached through the roofing. The roofing under and around them cannot be replaced or repaired while they are in the way, so they come off and go back on afterward.
Is my solar system leased, and does it matter?
It matters. If a solar company owns the panels, your agreement may limit who can remove them. Read the leased solar guide and call your provider first.
What if my system stopped producing?
Note the inverter's fault code or message and what the monitoring app shows, and do not open equipment. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Are you a solar company?
No. This site is an independent referral service. When you call or send a request, it goes to an independent local solar contractor. The contractor gives the quote and does the work. Ask for their license number and verify it at cslb.ca.gov.
